PASSPORTS & VISAS

CURRENCY

Bulgarian lev: The lev is the currency of Bulgaria. It is divided in 100 stotinki. In archaic Bulgarian the word "lev" meant "lion". Bulgaria, as a part of European Union will adopt Euro in the years to come.
BANKS AND EXCHANGE
Money can be exchanged safely in the banks and also at reputable exchange bureaus (hotels and airports usually quote less favour­able rates). Exchange bureaus are required to display clearly the exchange rates and they are no longer allowed to charge commis­sions, so check this first. Exchange rates at the time of publishing: 1 EURO -- 1.95583 BGN. Banks are open from 09:00 to 16:30 Monday to Friday. Exchange bureaus are usually open from 09:00 until 17:00 or 18:00 and stay open later in the summer. There are also non­stop exchange bureaus. In Sofia there are plenty of ATMs, with particular concentration in the city centre. All major European and North American debit cards are accepted in the country.

 

 

CREDIT CARDS

The main international credit cards are accepted in most hotels, shopping centres, car rental offices and some restaurants. The stickers on the shop-windows or at the hotel entrances will provide you with information as to which credit cards are accepted.

 

 

PHARMACY

Usually open from 08:00 to 20:00. You will be provided with more detailed information at the reception desk in your hotel.

 

WATER
Tap water is safe to drink. However, we advise you to drink bottled mineral water.

 

POPULATION
The population of Bulgaria is about 7 000 000 people; 1.2 million live in the capital (Sofia).

Bulgarian.
Other spoken languages in the Varna are English, Russian and German.

TRAVEL
Varna is well connected to many of European capitals and large cities through a lot of direct regular flights, charter flights in the summer season, railways and bus services. In addition you can reach to Varna through the capital city Sofia by plane, buses and trains. Varna is situated 450 km from Sofia. Flight time from Central Europe to Sofia is less than three hours; from Sofia to Varna it is less than 40 minutes. Travelling by bus from Sofia to Varna is about 6-7 hours. Travelling by bus from Burgas to Varna is about 2h 30min.
